就在上个月,10月21日,伦敦制作人 Burial 在 Hyperdub 发行了今年的第二支 EP《Streetlands》,黑胶唱片将在 2023 年 1 月份推出。


这位曾以 dubstep 等电子音乐风格成名的制作人在今年初放出了一张 43 分钟的 Ambient EP《Antidawn》;这是他自 2007 年的代表专辑《Untrue》以来最长的一次发行,同时也是 Burial 音乐的新篇章。 这次的《Streetlands》有三轨,时长在34分钟左右,依旧是 Ambient 音乐。


更确切来说 Burial 的“氛围音乐作品”听感上更像是被互联网听众称之为“Night Bus”的音乐标签,源自其过往的一首名为"Night Bus"的作品,在氛围音乐的路线中全程贯彻着阴郁,空灵的特点,时不时来上一阵白噪音和突然冒出的舞曲节奏,有种在 Rave 活动结束后选择返程,坐上一辆午夜大巴时的心境,这一标签也成为了各大音乐平台上的主题歌单与长视频集,更多音乐人选择尝试做出“Burial味道的音乐”。


总之,Burial 一直都是来自英国上空的电子幽灵,为什么这么说呢?这一只幽灵汲取了英式电子舞曲的灵魂,但却又将它们飞升化作了更加抽象与“破败”的存在。

《Streetlands》以神秘的音符谜团开场,在傍晚和黎明的阴霾之间逐渐被旋律解开。经典的乙烯基声(黑胶唱片表面噪音)提醒着我们:是 Burial 在讲述这段冬日故事;每一次出其不意的琶音,仿佛在邀请我们进入故事的下一章;缺失的节拍通过采样和录制创造了故事的每一个情节。 或许对听完《Antidawn》的你来说,这张 EP 没有那么新颖了,但它还是没有失去 Burial 式独特的魅力。

Hospital Chapel

以沉长而绵延不绝的旋律中推进,在第七分钟采样了 22 年前的经典歌曲“cLOUDDEAD - Apt. A (1)”。它所描绘的世界是暗淡的,是这两年感受到的失望和痛苦的音频画像。


Streetlands

这首标题曲多处采样了电影《银翼杀手2049》原声带中的“2049”、“Sea Wall”、“Blade Runner”等几首歌曲。它像是被陷入一个不断变化的音景漩涡,没有太多的重复使这首曲目脱颖而出。


Exokind

这首歌曲的脊柱上穿插着 90 年代的Prog-trance 琶音,并以偶然的对话和一些蜘蛛网状的纹理为点缀。52 秒出的人声“Be one of us”采样的是电影《捉鬼小灵精》(The Lost Boys)中 Keifer Sutherland 的台词。这些 80 年代末和 90 年代的线索,肯定会让任何当时在英国长大的人感到怀旧。

Last month, on October 21, London-based producer William Emmanuel Bevan, otherwise known as Burial, released Streetlands, his second EP of the year on Hyperdub. The vinyl comes out January 1, 2023.


Earlier this year, the dubstep legend released the 43-minute-long ambient EP Antidawn, his longest-running release since his 2007 critically acclaimed masterpiece Untrue LP and a milestone release marking a new chapter in Burial’s musical career.  This time, Streetlands has three tracks, with a run time of around 34 minutes, and is another ambient offering by Burial.


Burial’s ambient works feel like they belong in what those on the internet term the “night bus” genre, a term derived from the track “Night Bus” from Burial’s eponymous debut LP from 2006. The genre is defined by melancholic and ethereal atmospheres, with bursts of white noise and interspersed with skeletal drum grooves, conjuring up feelings of experiencing the afterglow of a rave while sitting on a night bus going home alone. The “night bus” label has turned into a popular theme for user curated playlists on major music platforms and the “night bus” sound has inspired countless musicians to make “Burial-flavoured music”, aiming to capture the genre’s ephemeral mood.


In short, since his debut, Burial has always been like a spectre haunting the electronic music scene of the UK, a ghost that transforms the soul of British dance music into something more abstract and “fallen”.


Streetlands opens ominously, with the midnight haze being gradually unraveled by melody. We enter a story set in a wintery backdrop, with Burial’s signature vinyl crackle shrouding the scene. Each unexpected arpeggio portends the start of the story’s next chapter. Through samples and field recordings, Burial fills in the lack of beats on the album, pushing the plot of the story along the way. Perhaps, for those who have listened to Antidawn, Streetlands doesn’t offer much in the way of innovation. But regardless, a listen to Streetlands still retains the familiar magic of a Burial release.

A journey through a long, unbroken melody, sampling the 22-year-old classic "cLOUDDEAD - Apt. A (1)" in the seventh minute. The world it paints is bleak, a sonic portrait of the disillusionment and pain felt over the past two years.


Streetlands

The album title track samples several songs from “Blade Runner 2049” such as “2049”, “Sea Wall”, and “Blade Runner”. Conjuring a vortex of ever-changing soundscapes, the track gives little repetition for audiences to hold onto.


Exokind

The track’s structure is decorated with 90s prog-trance arpeggios, punctuated by casual dialogue samples and cobweb-like textures. Sampled vocals from pop-cultural signifers, such as the “be one of us” line at 52 seconds in, sampled from Keifer Sutherland’s line in The Lost Boys, reveal bits of Burial’s personal history, reflecting his nostalgia for the late 80s and 90s in the UK.
