Lasse Marhaug is a Norwegian musician who aside from being active in the noise music scene is often found on collaborative projects with musicians in the improvisation, jazz, rock, and extreme metal scenes. He has also created works for theatre, dance, installation, and video art projects. He has collaborated with numerous musicians such as Runhild Gammelsæter of Thorr’s Hammer, experimental metal band Sunn O))), jazz multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee, the renowned Merzbow, etc. Context, released this September on Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound, is his latest collection of personal works.
Context 1
On this track, a trembling static gradually builds until it is joined by a continuous long whistle sound and searing noise. This drawn out sound seems to originate from the vanishing point of a far-off distance, a dust cloud that rushes in from just outside the audible range of the listener. The accumulation of sound becomes ever more intricate, and the noise becomes ever more powerful, until the violence of the noise grows to dominate the scene like a thousand wires whipping the listener’s brain.
Context 2
A gentle beeping sound interjects into the track intro’s furtive silence. A sleepy-eyed pad sound comes in from time to time and stretches the listener’s sense of time until the sound grows fully awake to become steady and continuous like something breathing. The static hum of AC electricity reappears like cosmic microwave background radiation. Could it be that at this time, an awakened consciousness has gradually ascended into this vast and empty expanse of outer space? Sharp glitchy sounds join in, followed by a deep bass, establishing a foreboding undercurrent lurking in all directions.
Context 4
After establishing the scene with whirring wind, we’re introduced to a sound of subterranean origin, rolling through a landscape thick with ground fog and moving back and forth. A continuous crisp grunt comes out of nowhere, and gradually gives way to the slow sound of a pulse. This low-end bass accumulates energy with each repetition while gradually increasing in speed before slowly fading away.
Context 5
Unlike previous songs, Context 5 starts off with a sharp high frequency noise, chattering and restless before gradually revealing an order to the madness and cutting into deep space. Accompanying the initial trail of noise, a soft pulse-like glitch sound follows. It’s now that a drawn-out pad sound adds colour to the scene and the noise stops. The scene gradually expands out to infinity, while a hidden energy slowly accumulates via periodic repetition of the sound.
Context 6
A storm condensed into a hard block of sound lasting for less than two seconds hits the ground, sending dust flying into the air. With each percussive beat, the block of sound gradually disintegrates and the sustain gradually becomes longer and longer. A familiar glitch sound reappears, and then comes the crisp sound of some instrument, with a melody that gives the scene some colour. This stops, and then a crackling sound starts massaging the listener’s brain with countless little bubbles bursting as they rise into the air.
